School Challenges

The challenges our school faces

Freedom Primary School embarked on its humble beginnings as a small institution in 2002 operating from a handful of shipping containers in Freedom Park, an informal settlement located south of Johannesburg. It was through the visionary leadership of our beloved founding president, Nelson Mandela, that generous donors were brought together to construct the exceptional state-of-the-art school that stands proudly today. It was officially opened in 2003, 29 September.
The enduring impact of years of socio-economic and political challenges still lingers within our school community, affecting nearly everyone who resides in its vicinity. Our learners reside in this community, where many parents originate from rural areas. This unique circumstance presents us with a communication puzzle to solve.

Regrettably, due to the pressing need to secure employment in a predominantly job-scarce environment, many parents are unable to actively participate in their children's education. Some parents are even compelled to scavenge through dumping sites to make ends meet. The harsh realities of poverty, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy, as well as drug and alcohol abuse, continue to cast a ripple effect on our ability to function optimally as a school. Our students often find themselves in challenging circumstances, with many being orphans or hailing from single-parent or even child-headed households.
The prevalence of these social issues within our neighbourhood places an overwhelming burden on our dedicated educators. We face the daunting challenge of an imbalanced teacher-pupil ratio, as we strive to meet the needs of our ever-growing student body. With an enrolment of over one and a half thousand learners, our dedicated staff of only 45 works tirelessly to ensure that each child receives the attention and support they deserve.

The significant increase in our demographics, combined with the unique distinction of being the sole school in the area that welcomes IsiZulu and IsiXhosa speaking learners, has resulted in overpopulated classrooms.
Despite these circumstances, we remain resolute in our commitment to providing a high-quality education for all our students. Our passionate educators go above and beyond, employing innovative teaching strategies and personalized attention to create a conducive learning environment for each individual learner. We understand the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diverse linguistic backgrounds of our students, embracing their rich cultural heritage and linguistic diversity as assets that contribute to their overall development.
While we acknowledge the challenges posed by an increased student population, we remain unwavering in our pursuit of academic excellence and student well-being. We continuously explore creative solutions to address the issue of classroom overcrowding, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.

At Freedom Primary, we believe that education is a transformative force that transcends limitations. We are dedicated to equipping our students with the skills, knowledge, and resilience needed to navigate an ever-changing world. Together, as a united school community, we face these challenges head-on, embracing the unique opportunities presented by our diverse student body.
By fostering a culture of collaboration and support, we strive to create an inclusive and nurturing environment where each child's voice is heard and valued. Through innovative teaching methods, tailored interventions, and a strong sense of community, we empower our students to rise above any obstacle and succeed.

While we acknowledge the impact of our overpopulated classrooms, we are committed to continually seeking solutions that prioritize the well-being and educational experience of our students. We appreciate the understanding and support of our parents and guardians as we navigate these challenges together, ensuring that every child at Freedom Primary receives the quality education they deserve.
With determination and resilience, we are confident that we can overcome these hurdles and continue to provide an exceptional educational journey for each and every student who walks through our doors. Together, we will forge a path of success and opportunity, where every learner can flourish and make their mark in the world.
